| The Basics |
Character Name: Hermione Jane Granger PB: Kimberly Williams Age: Birthday: September 19, 1979 Wand: 14in, vine, with a core of dragon heartstring. House in School: Gryffindor Bloodline: Muggle-born Political View:What would probably be considered radical liberal in the Wizarding world. She is fiercely devoted to the cause of equality for all sentient beings, whether they be human pureblood or muggleborn, cursed or 'whole', goblin, centaur, elf etc. She is also completely opposed to the enslavement of elves, and has been working since her school days to find a way to better their situation. Allied with the Order of the Phoenix, she has found herself in direct opposition with the followers of Voldemort as well as the Ministry of Magic. On the former she believes that rehabilitation is possible, but is also aware of the extreme dangers of the surviving Death Eaters and sympathisers, and understands that in order to protect the world they might have to all be destroyed. With the latter her views are a bit more complex. While she believes that wizarding Britain needs a government and that a ministry is the best way to go, she thinks that the current incarnation is much too corrupt to justly govern. She is undecided on whether it is past saving and a new government should be established, or if it just needs a few good wizards, so to speak, to return it to a functioning government body. |
| Appearance |
Height: 5' 5'' Weight: 135lbs Eyes: Brown. She has good vision, though she expects to need glasses later in life as both her parents did. Hair: Extremely curly brown hair that is prone to massive frizz. Over the years she has discovered varying ways to tame it, but as most require significant effort she usually lets it frizz and simply ties it back out of her way. Build: Hermione is naturally on the curvy side, with wide hips and full, though not large, breasts. Naturally un-athletic, she tends to be slightly overweight when she hasn't had reason to be active. Dress Style: Hermione likes to dress comfortably and casually in muggle clothes, although her style of dress is always presentable in case she should she have to come into contact with an authority or important figure. She seldom dresses provocatively, though as she ages she has allowed more womanly and flattering clothes into her wardrobe. Basic Physical Description: Defining Marks: Aside from her bushy hair, which is a dead giveaway, Hermione has a scar on her lower back from a fight with a DE, and a birth mark on her hip on the right side. |
| Personality |
One thing that must be stated about Hermione's personality is that she is if not a genius then she is damn close to being one. Brilliant can most definitely be applied to her intelligence, and to her passions as well. Hermione Granger is a straightforward kind of person, though not in an intentionally callous way. She'll always say what is on her mind, though she will often take much care in saying it tactfully and in the way best suited for the one to hear it, the major exception to this rule being Ron Weasley. Hermione is a passionate individual, as she will pursue to great lengths anything she finds fascinating. She is a stickler for the rules, and will often admonish others for not acting to the standards she deems appropriate. Rules can be broken for her in times of great need, however, specifically when they have to do with Harry Potter, but also for other friends. When she feels something important has fallen into her hands to take care of she will go to any lengths to take care of it, including breaking many rules she otherwise would be horrified to even test. Behind her busy, bossy demeanor Hermione can be a quiet and caring girl who will sit and watch a friend for a long time just for a hint at how they are feeling. She will give up the things that she likes or wants to do if it means doing something nice for others. She will never turn down another in need, and as she grows more comfortable in herself more and more people are beginning to see the love and compassion that blooms within her and seek her out for sympathy and guidance. She is always happy to give it, even if she approaches the situation briskly. Strengths: Compassion, determination, and the ability to think outside the box. Hermione loves, and this is one of the greatest things about her. It is the reason that she does so many things for so many people, whether right or wrong, wanted or not. She hates to see others in suffering, and will go to extraordinary lengths to help them. Her other two best traits are very much entwined with this one. When she sees someone in pain she becomes determined to take care of the situation, and will find one even if none seems possible. Weaknesses: As in many people, the things that make Hermione strong also make her very weak. Her desire and determination to help often lead her to take hand in situations that she really should not be a part of. It also clouds her mind, as she does what she thinks is the right thing, regardless of any other evidence shown her. This part of Hermione should be scary to those around her, with such a brilliant mind, and such determination it would be, and has been in the past, very easy for Hermione to take herself far beyond where she ought to go. She could very easily turn into a zealot which would be very troublesome, for when she gets her eyes fixed on her target she will boss, connive, lie, steal, and otherwise find her way to her goal. |
| Psychology |
Extrovert/Introvert: Extrovert. While perhaps the word 'outgoing' isn't quite apt for Hermione, she is definitely outspoken, and tends to be more involved in the world outside than the world within. She does have her moments of introversion, but on the most part her focus is outward. Boggart Would Be: In school Hermione's boggart was Professor McGonagall furiously kicking her out of school, and wizarding society, for failing. Since the death of her parents, her boggart will have changed form. Now she will see her parents, lying together on the floor, dying and calling out for her help. Patronus Would Be: Hermione can produce a corporeal patronus, and has been able to since her 5th year. It takes the form of an otter, an animal that is very like Hermione herself. Otters share Hermione's quick wits, and often display ingenious and inventive behaviors such as using tools to open their food and wrapping themselves in kelp while they nap to avoid being swept into the sea. The otter is inquisitive, social, and playful as well, all traits that Hermione shares, though her playfulness can sometimes be overlooked in the shadow of her practicality. |
| Sexuality |
Hermione is straight, though she finds absolutely nothing wrong with any other sexuality and does not tend to be homophobic. Her sexual history is rather limited. During her time at school, she had only a short relationship with Viktor Krum when she was fourteen. After Hogwarts there hasn't been much chance for dating in Hermione's life. She tried to see a wizard from the Order, but it lasted little less than three months and was completely unfulfilling. Though she was sexual with the wizard, she is still a virgin and imagines she will be for a while. |
| Lifestyle |
Occupation: Hermione is currently unemployed. All of her efforts since leaving school have been in fighting the war. Her parents left her enough money that she does not have to decide right away what she would like to do, but the money will not last forever, and besides that Hermione is not the type of person to enjoy free time. She is currently thinking of becoming a Healer-in-training at St.Mungo's, hoping to go into a research. There are some who have suggested that she become an auror, but Hermione is wary of such a position. Residence: Hermione has been unable to return to her parent's home in Ipswich since their death, but she hasn't wanted to sell the home either. For now she has been living at 12 Grimmauld Place Financial Status: Currently has enough money to live on, due to the money she inherited when her parents died. It isn't enough to last forever though, and she would rather invest it and make her own way rather than become dependant on it. When she finally is able to sell her parents home she the amount will, of course, increase. |
| Family |
Parents: Lydia (Elton) and Stephan Granger. Deceased. Siblings: none Before their death, Lydia and Stephan Granger shared a close relationship with their daughter. Though the pair never fully understood the world that she was living in, they accepted that they loved their child, and that was enough. Through the years and growing danger tensions rose occasionally between the headstrong Hermione and her worried parents, but both sides saw that the other was acting out of concern (Lydia and Stephan for their daughter, Hermione for her friends) and disagreements never erupted into battles. After Hogwarts Hermione's parents urged her to attend a muggle university, if only to provide herself with the opportunity to have a choice to rejoin the muggle world later should she wish to. Her decision not to attend, and the subsequent pain it cost her parents, is one thing that Hermione regrets most now that they are gone. Though the little family was always very close, Hermione has never been fond of the extended members of her family, on either side. Not allowed to know that she is a witch, the other family members nonetheless realized that Hermione was strange, and kept their distance from the too-bright, precocious child. After her parents's death Hermione has become more closed off than ever from the Eltons and the Grangers, though her grandparents on both sides and a cousin on the Elton side have been making an effort to connect with her. |
| History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time |
Primary school was a nightmare for Hermione. What was seen as precocious and brilliant by her parents was seen as strange and even frightening by her fellow students, and even teachers. Hermione withdrew from those around her, and when she did interact it was usually curt and bossy, as Hermione felt she was always ten correct steps in front of her peers and wanted to get them there quickly before they abandoned her to play with someone else. Eventually the headmaster of her small school responded to the situation and had a meeting where he told Hermione and her parents that being smart was good, but that being abnormal was not. She was instructed to try to behave 'normally' and as for being well ahead of the class, his options were for her to skip a grade, or for her to just not allow herself to get ahead. Her parents chose to skip her, which made it even harder for Hermione. When hope seemed lost for Hermione ever to enjoy school, the letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry arrived. At once Hermione felt as if all of her dreams had come true. She stared in loving awe as professor McGonagall explained the situation to her parents, feeling as if this magical world were made entirely for her. Here, she would never be told to keep herself normal, here they had a huge variety of amazing things and they wanted her to study them! Though her parents were reluctant and still in shock, the look on their child's face convinced them to give their consent. Hermione started Hogwarts with very, very high expectations. She thought that she was going to a place of magical learning and wonder, where there would be hundreds of other kids just like her, and that she would be appreciated and loved in return by her fellow students. Her dreams were shattered even before she got to sit beneath the sorting hat as she learned the realities of the wizarding world, and that the children there were not so very different from the muggle ones she knew. Beyond that, she learned of memory charms and squibs, and suddenly her fantasy life seemed very harrowing and impermanent indeed. She began to fear terribly that her great blessing of magic would be taken away from her. Instantly she reverted to her old bossy ways, trying to get some respect from the students around her, but also thinking that by helping them she would show them how caring and kind and friendly and worth knowing she was while proving to her teachers that she was very magical indeed and should be allowed to stay. This backfired tremendously, until Harry Potter and Ron Weasley turned back and saved her from a troll in her first year. This was, and will likely continue to be, the turning point in Hermione's life. In that instant she told a lie, gained friends, and saw that perhaps there was something nice in herself that others could see as well. As Hermione grew, so did her outlook on life and her place within the wizarding world. Her achievements at Hogwarts were testament to her outstanding abilities as a witch, and as a human being. A favourite of most of her teachers, Hermione proved time and again that she was a competent hard worker, and when she received her OWLs none were surprised by the long list of Os - except perhaps for Hermione, who ever harbored her fear of failure. Outside of classes Hermione grew a social consciousness, first with her efforts, however ineffectual, to free the house-elves from slavery, and later with her brainchild the DA. Organising these things helped Hermione to see that there are more important things in live than getting high marks and praises. It also taught her that what is established and common sense isn't always right, and that somethings a good thing has to be done in sneaky ways. The DA was the prime teacher of the latter, as her involvement was absolutely right, and went absolutely against the rules. Still, the thing that shaped Hermione most in those years was her bond with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. The boys taught her things both mundane and profound, and their words and actions have shaped her in ways she can not even imagine. Through their friendship they have taught her how to feel good about herself; that she is a woman worth knowing. With their confidence in her abilities they have helped her to realize that what she has learned, and what she has done with a wand, can never be taken from her. Finally, through their group bond of bravery and their common cause of fighting for the Light they have given her a reason beyond self for living and for fighting. The lessons that Harry and Ron bestowed upon her did nothing but bloom once they left Hogwarts in pursuit of the remaining Horcruxes. Out in the real world and fighting for her life and the lives of others, Hermione has developed a toughness that she has managed to keep from making her cynical and that has helped to keep her strong. Her skills as a fighter have improved, though she loathes physical acts of violence and avoids them at all costs. While fighting the war, her vision was turned outward, so that every move she made was calculated to help Harry, Ron, and the Order. She swam through seas of research, decoded and translated runes for codes, and fought on the front lines with her friends until the moment that Harry had to go on alone. Even when her parents died at Voldemort's hands she allowed herself little time for grief, and instead fought harder and with more bravery to bring the evil wizard down. Now with Voldemort gone, Hermione's vision has turned inward for the first time in years. Her parents death is a painful wound that still bleeds afresh every morning. Blaming herself for their death has begun to erode some of Hermione's confidence and vitality. While not working served her well when there was fighting to be done, now she finds herself bereft of plan or purpose, and is struggling to rediscover what it was she wanted to do with her life. Complicating matters is her now nearly severed link from the muggle world. While her parents lived she pushed to be part of the wizarding world, but now fully immersed she feels a longing to be part of muggle life once again. Where she will go from here is unknown, but what is certain is that she will meet it as she always has, with bravery and hope, standing beside her friends held together by love and trust. |
